"Sale of Negroes," Telegraph and Texas Register, May 5, 1838
Summary: The executors of the late James Routh's will announced an auction to sell Routh's slaves to raise $3,000 to pay the debts on his estate. The slaves were two single men, a little girl, and two families, a total of 12 slaves. The auction would be held at New Washington on June 6th.
BY virtue of a decree of the hon. A. Briscoe, Probate Judge for the county of Harrisburg, bearing date May 3d, 1838, and in accordance with powers vested in us by the testator Ja's. Routh dec'd, in his last will and testament, we will sell at public auction, in the town of New Washington of this county, on the 6th day of June next, he following slaves, to wit:--Negro man Bill, man Ben and his wife Jinney, man Lew or Lewis, his wife Maria and their 6 children, and a girl Harriet, or so many of them as will bring about the amount of $3,000. To be sold for cash, for the purpose of paying the debts of the estate of said James Routh, dec'd.
