"Runaway Taken Up," Telegraph and Texas Register, November 18, 1840

Summary: An ad from William Nabers saying he caught a runaway from Louisiana. Gave the slave's name, age, complexion, height, weight, and described several scars on his body. Also said he spoke French and was a carpenter. Asked the owner to claim him and pay charges in six months or Nabers would sell the runaway to satisfy expenses.


COMMITTED to the Jail of Fayette County, Texas, (by M'Kree White,) on the 5th day of May, 1840, a Negro Man, who says his name is HENRY, and says he belongs to Beaties Giddrest (or Bathest Gulre,) living in the parish of Appalouses, Louisiana, on Bayou Berut, about 10 miles below Chinaville. Said slave is about 25 years old, of yellow, (or mulatto) complexion 5 feet 4 inches high, and would weigh about 135 lbs, has a scar on the left arm, chin, and forehead, all occasioned apparently from a burn. He says he is a carpenter by trade. Speaks the French language, and upon the whole is a very pert smart boy.

The owner is required to come forward, prove property, pay charges, and take him away, within six months, or he will be sold according to law, to satisfy the expences.
