"$50 Reward," Telegraph and Texas Register, June 30, 1838

Summary: An ad offering a reward for a runaway. Gave the slave's name, height, complexion(yellow), and the clothing he wore. Interestingly, the owner also said the slave took a rifle with him and escaped with another black man. Offered $50 if caught outside Austin colony, $25 if caught inside Austin colony.


MY NEGRO MAN BOB runaway from me on the 23d inst; he is about 5 feet 9 inches high, yellow complexion; took with him a rifle gun, shot pouch and powder horn, the latter is brass mounted, and a strong coarse Bowie knife and a black napsack[sic]. his clothing is a blue cloth coat, Nankeen pants, a seal skin cap and some other articles. He left in company with a tall black fellow, belonging to Mrs. R. Hardeman, 3 miles above me on Caney. I will give the above reward $50 for said Negro BOB if taken out of Austin's colony, if taken in Austin's colony $25 reward, with all reasonable expenses paid if delivered to me on Caney, or at Col. J. Ebiely's on Peyton's Bayou near Matagorda, or secured in some jail so that I get him again.
