Summary: The Sheriff put out an ad saying he was holding a twenty year old male runaway. He gave the man's description and said the owner must claim him and pay charges or the state would deal with the runaway. All this in spite of the fact the runaway claimed he was a free man.

LODGED in my hands as a runaway slave, a mulatto man, says his name is Wash, about 20 years old, 5 foot 3 or 4 inches high, has lost some of his upper fore teeth; the said boy states he is free, and formerly lived with a man by the name of Bosher, in Nachitoches, U.S. The owner of said negro, if any, will come forward, prove property, pay charges, and take him away, or he will be dealt with according to law. JOHN DAVIS,

Jackson Co, jan2 3-184[sic] Sheriff.
