"Mayor's Office City of Galveston," Civilian and Galveston Gazette, April 16, 1842

Summary: Mayor Allen issued a decree saying that blacks could no longer hold dances within the city limits.


COMPLAINTS having been made of the frequent gatherign[sic] of Negroes for the purpose of holding Balls. Notice is hereby given, that in future no assemblage of Negroes will be tolerated within the city.

Given under my hand and seal of maoralaty[sic] this 9th day of Feb. 1842n J M ALLEN, Mayor.
